Maintaining Lasting ProfessionalAssociations in Medical Translation
I first discovered the secrets of getting along with people of different nationalities during my job with a Portland Translation Company. It was at this Houston Translation company where I learned that the most important skill needed by translators today is the ability to get along with diverse people including clients and interpreters and that is regardless of the type of project that a person is working on. What’s more, it didn’t matter if the project was single page document or a large brochure for a large oil and gas company in Saudi Arabia or a fly by night on the side of a mountain in Appalachia: the philosophy for establishing rapport were universal.
Many people were envious of my people skills but in many respects, I believe that I had them since I was born. But could it be possible that I have a super power? Maybe I have a special ability to create lasting bonds with others. Are these connection skills and abilities learned or genetic? Would this unique skill be something that I can teach other translators? I thought that I would give it the old college try. From more than twenty long years of professional English to German Translation experience, that led me to move from one end of the country to the other, that attitude and body talk are critical when making an introduction. It’s my belief that by making some minor adjustments in body language, tweaking my choice of words and using the correct body language that I could put people at ease. Another discovery that I have made is that all cultures have a set words and expressions that can create a reaction. With my knowledge, I decided to look a little deeper. Sometimes you encounter people who are more difficult to talk with than others people. There are moments when I meet a particular person who tends to be fascinating to me but when my neighbors meet the person, they hand that person to be uninspiring. Clearly, something must be happening on a level beyond our conscious awareness.
About this time, I began looking for information on training, shaping and controlling our minds through subliminal messaging and imagery. Believe it or not, as a translation worker, I had already been performing many of the activities instinctively that these doctors were endorsing in their research. Not only did these men develop groundbreaking findings in the area of our subconscious mind, they also determined that everyone has a favorite sense. When you finally uncover the driver that influences the person then you can begin to address their needs and win them over. My mission was becoming more focused. I set aside my Medical Translation Services work and resolved to focus on how people work on the inside as well as how they look on the outside. Two years after I left my position with that Houston Translation company, I earned a certificate in subconscious meditation and mental development. With the completion of this program, I went back to my initial research and made some exciting findings about how spoken and non-spoken communication can be used to influence human behavior. The results of my work were later heralded by famous psychology journals and embraced by training given by the American Translators Association.
