Or at the very least, control your feelings. Just make sure you don’t feel too much. And just don’t feel with intensity.
At first, we simply attempt to turn off the ‘bad’ feelings – the distressing ones.
“Big boys don’t cry.”
“Good girls don’t get mad.”
But that’s just for starters.
You can’t really shut out certain feelings and let everything else through. Because all our feelings come through one pathway. Crimping a garden hose restricts the entire flow. Which is what occurs here.
We want to not feel certain emotions, but instead we’re restricting all of them.
Your power comes from your emotions. They make us feel alive. When you don’t feel your feelings, you start shutting down. You keep feeling worse, but you don’t know why. You think the feelings are what’s making you feel pain.
But in actuality, it’s when you don’t feel the feelings that pain starts. It’s painful to not feel your feelings. It takes work, and effort. You gotta make up all kinds of stories about your feelings.
Like invisible structures, these stories block the flow of feeling. And it’s the structures themselves that become the source of emotional pain.
